"Touli Bebo Mourad, a 52-year-old Mandean woman, and the only female taxi driver in Nineveh province, was recently killed by ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Sham/Levant) terrorist group, for refusing to sexually submit to them. Throughout her life, she struggled to support her disabled husband and only child. She was a pioneer in her own way for the woman in the rural regions of Nineva as none drove a taxi like she did. May she forever rest in peace." Original article in Arabic here.
The Mandians: The small ancient ethnoreligious community of Mandians have long formed part of the intricate and complex social fabric of Iraq but like so many communities in the region they are being systematically destroyed by a perverse ideology that has nothing to do with Islam but which cloaks itself in the rhetoric of religion to incite one against the other. Mandeans are a small pre-Christian sect that view Saint John the Baptist as their saviour. The religion combines some aspects of Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Gnosticism. There are an estimated 100,000 Mandeans worldwide. In Iraq they once numbered between 60 - 70,000 people but their numbers collapsed in the aftermath of the U.S. - U.K /NATO war on that country in 2003. Many fled to nearby Iran, Syria and Jordan or to the world beyond. Another part of the regions rich religious and cultural and social heritage destroyed.
